Abstract:

This online module synthesizes ethics concepts, case studies, relevant policy, and best practices to assist the teaching and learning of ethical data practice in science and engineering research. Following the lifecycle of research data management, the module is organized in four related units: 1. Planning for Data, 2. Generating Data, 3. Processing Data, 4. Using, Sharing, and Preserving Data. Overall, the module seeks to advance an ecological perspective of data ethics. We use the "ecology of data" to describe a complex system of humans, non-human animals, institutions, technology, and values that are brought into contact with each other by the flow of data.
