Abstract:

This demonstration concerns the University of Virginia Library's integration of powerful open source tools (including Fedora Commons digital object repository, Apache Solr indexing system, and Orbeon Forms XForms engine) using an Apache ServiceMix service bus providing curator-driven workflows for metadata editing and indexing. This system features elegant forms for metadata manipulation, flexible configuration of indexing transformations, and asynchrony affording iterative work to curatorial personnel. Essential motivations for our work include the placing of curation firmly in the hands of curators and the thoroughgoing de-synchronization of workflows to obtain good scaling characteristics and to afford immediate feedback throughout the workflows.
